Filing deadline

Wow.  Just wow.

Today is the day people have to file their tax returns if they filed an extension.  I had sent all but one of my returns out for signature before today.  The last one got me his last form last night, and I sent it out first thing this morning.

One guy told me he'd be in to sign between 3 and 4, and he came.  He paid my (rather large) fee, thanked me profusely and left.  His ex wife had to sign too, and she had some trouble but she got it done in the end.

Another one, the wife signed about noon.  At about 2 the husband started emailing me, very upset because he couldn't sign on his phone and he was in a meeting.  My eyes rolled so hard my partner heard them in the next office.  He finally managed to sign, but he was pretty grumpy about it.  (let's be clear, again -- they've known since April that today was the deadline, and didn't even get me anything until Thursday).

My final one that I thought I might get back, the ones who owe $75K?  Crickets.  My partner had one too.  We'd told them we were leaving the office at 3.  At 3:45 her client called and started whining about owing so much, and how could they possibly pay?  At 4:15, my client emailed me wondering if we could explore whether I'd taken every deduction, and asking me to add about $200 of deduction to his state return.  Argh!!!  I told him no, either sign it now and we'll amend it later or don't sign it.  Either way I need to leave, I waited for you.  And he still took another 15 minutes to get me the signatures.

Three others never got back to me at all.  Sigh.  My partner had one who was supposed to bring in his signed paperwork, and he kept calling her complaining that it was too inconvenient.  He finally showed up and also brought her two tax forms showing winnings at the casino.  This morning.  So he was gambling while he was whining about having to bring in his paperwork.  We laughed very hard at that one.

I am not in the habit of putting people on extension, but this year a lot of people asked for one, and this year a lot of people owed a lot.  It's not a good combination.

Ah well.  Onward and upward.  Today someone dropped off a huge box of unsorted documents.  I am supposed to go through them and create a 2014 return for someone who has big troubles with IRS.  I'm getting a huge retainer in advance, I'm thinking.

  1. Good grief! How do you manage to hold on to your temper? I have always thought that you could only get an extension if the IRS owed you money. Hmmm.
