Hard to Believe

It's hard to believe how much has happened since I wrote that last post.  On September 23, my mom finished her dinner, stood up to put her dishes in the sink and discovered that her foot had fallen asleep when she put weight on it.  She went down hard, whacked the fireplace with her head and broke her hip in four places.

I have been on her case since dad got sick to wear one of those necklaces that can summon help.  I think she secretly thought that, even though she knew people who had fallen and couldn't get up, that would never happen to her.  But she says she could not move.  Because her daughter did not listen when she said she didn't need a texting cell phone and got her one anyway, it happened to be right there where she could reach it.  My brother happened to be at a poker tournament 30 seconds away.  She was in an ambulance on her way to the hospital within ten minutes.

Thank goodness for that phone.  It is certain she would have laid there all night, and possibly a whole 'nother day and night, before somebody stopped by.

My brother called me to let me know they were on their way to the hospital.  I did not expect to have to go back to that hospital this year, or actually this decade.  I was sick to my stomach.

Mom was in a lot of pain, they gave her four doses of morphine and it didn't do anything.  I do not believe in pain and got them to give her something stronger, which did finally help.  I spent the night at the hospital with her to make sure she got what she needed.  Her nurse was a lovely young man who appeared to be about 12 years old.

Long story short, she had surgery the next day and is now the proud owner of enough metal that I'm pretty sure she's going to set off the TSA alarms next time we go somewhere.  After five days she got discharged to the same rehab that my dad was at, and she spent five weeks there.  She is recovering better than I'd hoped.  She still is very slow and needs a walker, but she's home now, and can do most things for herself.  We've persuaded her not to go upstairs by herself, but she probably could.  The only thing she needs assistance with is the shower, so far.

She's agreed not to drive for the time being, since it was her right leg and she doesn't have enough movement in it yet to be safe.  So I am spending many, many hours each week taking her to get her hair done, blood drawn (why do we get discharged with visiting nurse care if they can't draw blood?) and various other places.  I am so thankful that things aren't too busy at work so I can do this for her.

In the not busy at work department, we found a new office, signed papers, had it renovated and moved in Saturday.  We hired a moving crew and they were awesome.  My partner who does not like spending money was not happy to be spending money on them, but even she was impressed at how much they got done in a short time.  And since her back goes out all the time, but we can't persuade her not to carry heavy stuff around, it was a win win situation as far as I'm concerned.  I love my new office.  My old one had no windows.  This one has windows down two sides.

So that's what's been going on.  I shall try to be more diligent now.

  1. It sounds like you have been very busy, and that does take time away from blogging. :) (I have no excuse for my laziness!) Good news on your mom, and the new office.
